David de Carvalho is the Executive Director of Catholic Education for the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. He started his career as a secondary teacher at Xavier College in Melbourne in 1989.  He moved with his family to Canberra and in 1998 was appointed as CEO of the National Catholic Education Commission, a role in which he served for six years before joining the Australian Public Service in 2004. He held senior executive positions in the departments of Treasury, Health and Ageing, Finance and Administration, Education and the Prime Minister and Cabinet. In 2015 was appointed as Deputy Secretary in the NSW Department of Family and Community Services, before becoming the inaugural CEO of the NSW Education Standards Authority in February 2017.  Two years later he was appointed as CEO of the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).  From November 2023 to May 2025 he served as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Theology at the University of Notre Dame Australia. David has tertiary qualifications in Arts, Education, Theology, Public Administration and Public Law.
